Disaster Recovery Planning That Keeps Work Moving

Disaster recovery planning is how your business decides what happens when a server fails, files disappear, ransomware hits, or a key cloud system goes down. Bitworks IT helps small and growing organizations in Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin build practical recovery plans around backups, testing, documentation, and clear ownership. The goal is simple: know what matters, know how it gets restored, and keep downtime from turning into a bigger mess than it has to be.

Where Recovery Plans Usually Fall Apart

A backup tool by itself is not a recovery plan. If nobody owns the process, tests the restores, or documents what needs to come back first, the business can still be stuck when something breaks.

Backups Nobody Checks

Many businesses have backup software running somewhere, but no one is checking whether it is catching the right data. That creates a bad surprise when files, systems, or settings need to be restored under pressure.

No Recovery Order

When everything feels urgent, teams waste time arguing about what to restore first. A disaster recovery plan sets priorities so the systems that get jobs out the door come back in the right order.

Unclear Ownership

Recovery gets messy when vendors, internal staff, and outside providers all point at each other. Bitworks helps define who does what, where credentials live, and how the response should move.

Downtime That Spreads

A single failed server, cloud issue, or ransomware event can spill into phones, email, production, billing, and customer service. Planning ahead helps reduce confusion and gives your team a usable path forward.

What a Practical Recovery Plan Should Do

Good disaster recovery planning is not a binder that sits on a shelf. It is a working plan tied to your systems, your people, your risk, and your budget.

Build Around Real Operations

Bitworks looks at how your business actually works, not just what equipment is listed on a spreadsheet. That means identifying the systems that affect scheduling, quoting, accounting, production, customer service, and day-to-day work.

Connect Backups to Recovery

Backups matter most when they can be restored in a useful way. We help align local and off-site backup strategy, recovery options, and testing so your plan is based on evidence instead of hope.

Document the Moving Parts

Recovery depends on knowing the details before the pressure is on. Bitworks helps document servers, cloud services, Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace environments, network equipment, credentials, vendors, and recovery steps.

Support Governance and Control

Owners and managers need visibility into risk, cost, and responsibility. Our planning process helps bring order to backup decisions, continuity planning, cyber insurance questions, and the controls that keep IT from becoming a guessing game.

Disaster Recovery Planning FAQs

What Is Included in Disaster Recovery Planning?

Disaster recovery planning usually includes identifying critical systems, reviewing backup coverage, setting recovery priorities, documenting vendors and credentials, and defining who handles each step during an outage. Bitworks also looks at recovery testing, business continuity needs, and security risks that could affect restoration. The plan should be practical enough for your team to use when things are already stressful.

How Is Disaster Recovery Planning Different From Regular Backups?

Backups are copies of data or systems, while disaster recovery planning explains how those backups are used to get the business running again. A company can have backups and still be in trouble if nobody knows what is protected, how long restoration may take, or what system should come back first. Bitworks connects backup strategy with recovery steps, documentation, and operational priorities.

Do You Test Backups as Part of the Planning Process?

Recovery testing is an important part of a useful plan because it helps confirm that data can be restored when needed. Bitworks supports recovery testing as part of backup and business continuity work, including reviewing whether critical files, systems, or cloud data are covered. Testing also helps uncover gaps before a real outage exposes them.

Can Disaster Recovery Planning Help with Cyber Insurance Questions?

Yes, a documented recovery plan can help answer cyber insurance questions more clearly, especially when insurers ask about backups, MFA, endpoint protection, incident response, and business continuity. Bitworks supports governance and documentation around security controls, backup readiness, and risk visibility. We do not guarantee policy approval, but we can help you understand and organize the IT pieces insurers often ask about.

What Kinds of Businesses Need a Disaster Recovery Plan?

Any business that depends on computers, cloud tools, email, files, servers, or line-of-business software should have a recovery plan. Bitworks commonly supports small and mid-sized organizations, including professional services, manufacturing, construction, title companies, insurance, healthcare, nonprofits, and local businesses with multiple systems or locations. If downtime would stop work, delay billing, or leave customers waiting, planning matters.

How Does Bitworks Start a Disaster Recovery Planning Project?

We start by learning how your business works, what systems matter most, and where the current backup or documentation gaps may be. From there, Bitworks helps right-size the plan, stabilize the most important risks, and build a recovery approach that fits your operations and budget. The process is meant to create control, not bury you in technical paperwork.

Brought my laptop into The BitWorks for repair. The back of the case had broken and fallen off. They figured out it was not repairable so I purchased a new laptop there. Price was competitive, I didn’t have to drive an hour and they didn’t sell me add-ons I didn’t need. Great place to do business with. Highly recommend them.

Lightning Fast, Courteous and knowledgeable. Love this business and highly recommend them. As a small business owner it is hard to be without a phone or computer and certainly not for days. Being able to get repairs and service 'same day', often 'same hour' or 'immediate' is AMAZING... and the peace of mind that they know what they are doing is the icing on the cake. What a great company!

Just last week my husband said that he needed some work done on his computer and we like to use local businesses to get this type of work done. We looked up the Bitworks and went into Taylors Falls to see their shop. We were pleasantly surprised with the location and dropped off the desktop for repair. We had some work done and some other issues appeared when we got it home! I called and Riley and the owner of Bitworks worked to get it fixed. (A driver issue). Today it is fixed and working better than ever! Please give this business a try if you have ANY issues with your computers or phones. It will be great to have them as a local resource and keep them in business!

Brought my phone in for what one would think to...

Brought my phone in for what one would think to be an easy and common repair. I was told it would take 45min to an hour. After an hour and a half I was told that a ribbon had broken and that he didn’t have one in stock to fix and that the owner was out but he would check with him and get back to me that evening. Ok. At 5:30 or so that evening, they called and said that the ribbon is fine and they can put the phone back together and it would be ready in the morning. I called back in the morning to see if it was ready and was told that another ribbon had broke but the phone should be ready in an hour. I gave them an hour and a half and went in to pick it up. Sorry. It’s not ready. I will call you later. The owner is at a Dr appt until noon. Ok. So I get a call back saying that they have to order a part and it should be here tomorrow. You can either leave the phone longer or I can put it back together for you but the home button won’t work. I will pick it up and drop it back off when the part comes in, that will be easy to just replace the ribbon. Should only take about 20-30 min. 2 and a half hours later my phone is repaired. I was told I would get a discount. Umm. Didn’t look like it as it was still $145. I get things happen. But this was not good business.

As a result, she no longer feels the stress caused by watching her previous phone slowly disintegrate. If I ever need a cell phone or a computer repaired in the future, BitWorks will be my first (and only) stop.
