Vulnerability Assessments That Show Where Your Risk Really Sits

Security gaps are easier to fix when you can see them clearly. Bitworks IT provides vulnerability assessments for small and mid-sized businesses that need practical answers, not a giant report that sits in a folder. We help identify weak spots across devices, networks, cloud tools, access controls, patching, and documentation so your team knows what to fix first and why it matters.

The Real Problem Is Not Knowing What Is Exposed

Most businesses do not get into trouble because they ignored security on purpose. They get there because tools were added over time, vendors changed, employees came and went, and nobody had a clean view of what was still hanging open. A vulnerability assessment gives owners and managers a working list of risk, priority, and next steps before small gaps turn into bigger problems.

Cyber Insurance Questions You Cannot Answer

Insurance applications often ask about MFA, backups, endpoint protection, access controls, and patching. If you are guessing at those answers, a vulnerability assessment helps turn uncertainty into documented facts and practical next steps.

Patches That Fell Behind

Unpatched systems can create easy openings for attackers, especially when old workstations, servers, firewalls, or cloud accounts are still in daily use. We help find those weak points and sort what needs attention first.

Tools That Exist but Are Not Managed

A business can have security tools installed and still have gaps if nobody is reviewing, testing, or tying them back to operations. Vulnerability assessments help show whether the controls you paid for are actually doing useful work.

No Clear Owner for Risk

When IT risk falls on an owner, office manager, or internal generalist, important work can get buried under daily fires. We help create visibility so the business can make clear decisions about fixes, budgets, and priorities.

What a Useful Vulnerability Assessment Should Give You

A good assessment is not about scaring you with a pile of technical findings. It should help you understand what matters, what can wait, and what needs to be fixed before it slows down the business or creates avoidable exposure. Bitworks brings a plain-English, business-first approach that connects technical findings to operations, governance, cyber insurance pressure, and budget reality.

Clear Findings, Not Noise

We focus on findings that affect your real environment, including endpoints, networks, cloud tools, account access, and documentation gaps. The goal is to separate true priorities from technical clutter so your team knows where to start.

Practical Remediation Planning

Finding the gap is only part of the work. We help turn assessment results into a fix plan that considers downtime, cost, vendor coordination, user impact, and what your business can realistically handle.

CIS-Aligned Risk Visibility

Bitworks supports governance and security conversations aligned with frameworks such as CIS Controls, along with requirements that may come from PCI DSS, FTC Safeguards, IRS WISP, CJIS, CMMC, HIPAA, or cyber insurance. We do not promise compliance from a scan, but we help make the work clearer and more defensible.

Local IT Context

We work with businesses across Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin that need technology to stop getting in the way of the job. Our team looks at security in the context of how your people actually work, from office staff to crews, shops, multi-site teams, and regulated environments.

Vulnerability Assessment FAQs

What Does a Vulnerability Assessment Include?

A vulnerability assessment reviews areas where your business may be exposed, such as endpoints, network devices, user access, patching, cloud configuration, backup visibility, and security controls. The exact scope depends on your environment and what you need to prove or fix. Bitworks focuses on findings that can be turned into practical remediation steps, not just a long technical export.

Is a Vulnerability Assessment the Same as a Penetration Test?

No. A vulnerability assessment is usually focused on identifying and prioritizing known weaknesses, while a penetration test attempts to actively exploit weaknesses under a defined scope. Many small and mid-sized businesses start with an assessment because it gives them a clearer fix list before they spend money on deeper testing.

Can This Help with Cyber Insurance?

Yes, it can help you answer cyber insurance questions with more confidence and better documentation. Insurers often ask about MFA, endpoint protection, backups, patching, access control, and incident readiness. A vulnerability assessment can show where those controls are in place, where they are weak, and what should be addressed before renewal or review.

Will This Make Us Compliant?

No assessment by itself makes a business compliant. What it can do is identify gaps that may matter for frameworks or requirements such as CIS Controls, PCI DSS, FTC Safeguards, IRS WISP, CJIS, CMMC, HIPAA, or cyber insurance questionnaires. Bitworks helps connect the findings to a practical plan so leadership can decide what to fix and document next.

How Often Should a Business Run a Vulnerability Assessment?

Most businesses should consider assessments on a regular schedule and after major changes such as new locations, server upgrades, cloud migrations, firewall changes, or new compliance pressure. The right timing depends on your risk level, industry, insurance requirements, and how often your environment changes. Bitworks can help set a practical cadence that does not turn security into busywork.

What Happens After the Assessment?

After the assessment, the real value comes from sorting the findings and getting fixes moving. Bitworks helps prioritize remediation based on business impact, security risk, budget, and operational disruption. If you already have internal IT or vendors, we can help coordinate the work so the findings do not get stuck in limbo.

Brought my laptop into The BitWorks for repair. The back of the case had broken and fallen off. They figured out it was not repairable so I purchased a new laptop there. Price was competitive, I didn’t have to drive an hour and they didn’t sell me add-ons I didn’t need. Great place to do business with. Highly recommend them.

Lightning Fast, Courteous and knowledgeable. Love this business and highly recommend them. As a small business owner it is hard to be without a phone or computer and certainly not for days. Being able to get repairs and service 'same day', often 'same hour' or 'immediate' is AMAZING... and the peace of mind that they know what they are doing is the icing on the cake. What a great company!

Just last week my husband said that he needed some work done on his computer and we like to use local businesses to get this type of work done. We looked up the Bitworks and went into Taylors Falls to see their shop. We were pleasantly surprised with the location and dropped off the desktop for repair. We had some work done and some other issues appeared when we got it home! I called and Riley and the owner of Bitworks worked to get it fixed. (A driver issue). Today it is fixed and working better than ever! Please give this business a try if you have ANY issues with your computers or phones. It will be great to have them as a local resource and keep them in business!

Brought my phone in for what one would think to...

Brought my phone in for what one would think to be an easy and common repair. I was told it would take 45min to an hour. After an hour and a half I was told that a ribbon had broken and that he didn’t have one in stock to fix and that the owner was out but he would check with him and get back to me that evening. Ok. At 5:30 or so that evening, they called and said that the ribbon is fine and they can put the phone back together and it would be ready in the morning. I called back in the morning to see if it was ready and was told that another ribbon had broke but the phone should be ready in an hour. I gave them an hour and a half and went in to pick it up. Sorry. It’s not ready. I will call you later. The owner is at a Dr appt until noon. Ok. So I get a call back saying that they have to order a part and it should be here tomorrow. You can either leave the phone longer or I can put it back together for you but the home button won’t work. I will pick it up and drop it back off when the part comes in, that will be easy to just replace the ribbon. Should only take about 20-30 min. 2 and a half hours later my phone is repaired. I was told I would get a discount. Umm. Didn’t look like it as it was still $145. I get things happen. But this was not good business.

As a result, she no longer feels the stress caused by watching her previous phone slowly disintegrate.
